Questions

What is Benkyō?

Benkyō (勉強, “study” in Japanese) is an iOS app for learning Japanese. It covers kanji, vocabulary, and kana with SRS flashcards, handwriting recognition, quizzes, and detailed mastery tracking. Built for self-directed learners who want a focused, no-nonsense study tool.

How does the SRS system work?

Benkyō uses spaced repetition (SRS) to schedule reviews at optimal intervals. When you review a card, you rate how well you remembered it. Cards you struggle with appear more frequently, while mastered items are spaced further apart. The same proven method used by language learners worldwide.

Is Benkyō free?

Yes! Free to download with full access to the kanji and vocabulary library, SRS flashcards, quizzes, and progress tracking. Premium ($0.99/month or $19.99 lifetime) removes ads and supports ongoing development.

What kanji levels are included?

All 2,136 Joyo kanji organized by Japanese school grade (1–6 plus secondary). Also browseable by JLPT level (N5–N1). Each entry includes on’yomi, kun’yomi, English meanings, stroke count, and example vocabulary.

Does Benkyō work offline?

Yes. All kanji, vocabulary, and kana data is stored locally on your device. Study, take quizzes, and track progress without an internet connection. Your data never leaves your device.
